David Hockney rescued after being trapped in Amsterdam lift

Artist was in the Netherlands for the opening of a new show at the Van Gogh Museum

David Hockney was rescued by Amsterdam firefighters and the editor of the Daily Mail after being trapped in an overcrowded lift with journalists including the BBC’s James Naughtie.

The incident took place when the 81-year-old artist was heading for a cigarette, before being interviewed by the BBC Radio 4 Today programme.
