Trump to address 1,000 supporters on White House lawn despite coronavirus risks – RNC live

An ad the Democrats plan on airing during the RNC tonight begins with footage of Donald Trump at the 2016 RNC, saying, “The most basic duty of government is to defend the lives of its own citizens, any government that fails to do so is unworthy to lead.”

Four years ago at the Republican convention, Trump promised “safety, prosperity, and peace.”

Instead, he wrecked our economy, failed to respond to the coronavirus crisis, and fanned the flames of hate and violence. #TrumpChaos pic.twitter.com/0bAJQKt3jL

White House adviser Ja’Ron Smith was one of the few convention speakers to name African Americans who have recently been killed by police, including George Floyd.

Smith, one of the few black White House advisers, said he wished more Americans could see the “deep empathy [Trump] shows to families whose loved ones have been lost to violence.”

Documentary photographer Kirsty Mackay examines the causes of the ‘Glasgow Effect’ in a highly personal project. She looks at Glasgow’s excess mortality in comparison to the UK average and shifts the focus from the individual to government policy. In Glasgow people’s lives are cut short: male life expectancy in Possil is 66, in Penilee three young people took their own lives within the space of one week this June, suicide in Glasgow is 30% higher than in English cities, male life expectancy is seven years short of the UK average and women’s is four years less. This is not isolated to areas of deprivation – Glaswegians across all social classes experience a 15% reduction in life expectancy. We have known about the “Glasgow Effect” for more than a decade.
